On 20th February, 1915, John Gough, serving on the General Staff, was visiting his old battalion, the 2nd Rifle Brigade, in the line at Fauquissart when he was hit in the abdomen by a stray bullet fired from 1000 yards away in the enemy lines. He died from this wound two days later. |
